Astypalaia — The Butterfly of the Aegean

Why Astypalaia

There are Greek islands that belong, geographically and spiritually, to more than one world. Astypalaia is one of them. Sitting at the westernmost edge of the Dodecanese, closer to the Cyclades than to Rhodes, it occupies a threshold between two great island families — and it draws from both, wearing the whitewashed Cycladic architecture of its hilltop chora alongside the proud, self-reliant character of the Dodecanese.

The name Astypalaia means “old city” in ancient Greek, and the island has been inhabited continuously since at least the Bronze Age. What gives the island its famous silhouette is the extraordinary relationship between its white chora, its Venetian castle, and the windmills that line the ridge between them.

Geographically, Astypalaia is one of the most unusual islands in Greece. Its shape — two roughly oval landmasses connected by a narrow isthmus barely a hundred metres wide — resembles the outstretched wings of a butterfly.

What to Do and What to See

Astypalaia’s pleasures are the kind that resist summarising: the extraordinary chora seen from the harbour at dusk, the sequence of remote coves along its deeply indented northern coast, the ancient ruins scattered across its interior valleys, and the quiet hospitality of a community that has welcomed sailors for thousands of years.

The Chora and the Venetian Castle

The chora of Astypalaia is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in the Aegean. From the harbour at Pera Gialos, it appears as a dense mass of white cubic houses cascading down from the castle that crowns the hill above.

The castle itself was built by the Venetian Quirini family in the 13th century and remains one of the finest medieval fortifications in the Dodecanese. Within its walls stand the churches of Our Lady of the Castle and Saint George.

Below the castle, the windmills that line the ridge are among the most elegant in the Aegean and remain one of the island’s defining landmarks.

Pera Gialos – The Lower Harbour

Pera Gialos is the island’s traditional harbour settlement and social centre. Fishing boats, waterfront tavernas and colourful neoclassical buildings create one of the most charming harbour scenes in the Dodecanese.

The Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia houses important finds from the island’s long history, including artefacts from the Mycenaean period.

The Isthmus and Maltezana Bay

The narrow land bridge connecting the island’s two halves is one of the most remarkable geographical features in the Greek islands. Standing here with the sea visible on both sides is a uniquely Astypalaian experience.

Maltezana Bay offers calm waters, excellent anchorage and the remains of Roman baths with surviving mosaic floors.

The Coves of the Northern Coast

The northern coastline is a paradise for yacht cruising, with secluded bays, turquoise waters and beaches accessible primarily by sea.

Highlights include Agios Konstantinos, Tzanakia, Vatses, Papou and Kaminakia — each offering exceptional swimming and remarkable natural beauty.

The Offshore Islands

The surrounding islets, including Kounoupa and Syrna, provide outstanding opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and peaceful anchorage in crystal-clear waters.

The Interior and Ancient Sites

The island’s interior features rolling hills covered with thyme and wild herbs, traditional chapels and traces of ancient settlements that blend naturally into the landscape.

Why Choose Astypalaia

Astypalaia appeals to travellers seeking an authentic Greek island experience beyond the well-known destinations. Its spectacular chora, rich history, uncrowded coastline and genuine local character create an atmosphere that feels increasingly rare in the Mediterranean.

For yacht guests, the island offers exceptional cruising, sheltered anchorages, beautiful beaches and a welcoming community. Its relative remoteness helps preserve the peaceful atmosphere that makes it so special.

Astypalaia sits between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, drawing the best qualities from both. The result is an island that feels timeless, elegant and unmistakably Greek.

You arrive expecting a beautiful island. You leave understanding why so many sailors consider Astypalaia one of the Aegean’s true hidden gems.
